Elden Ring: Battlemage Hugues (Sellia Evergaol) Boss Fight

Battlemage Hugues is in the lowest tier of bosses in Elden Ring, Field Bosses, and is the only enemy and boss in Sellia Evergaol in Caelid. Like most lesser bosses in the game, this one is optional in the sense that you do not need to kill it in order to progress the main story.

As you probably know, bosses in Elden Ring are divided into three tiers. From lowest to highest: Field Bosses, Greater Enemy Bosses and finally Demigods and Legends.

Battlemage Hugues is in the lowest tier, Field Bosses, and is the only enemy and boss in Sellia Evergaol in Caelid. Like most lesser bosses in the game, this one is optional in the sense that you do not need to kill it in order to progress the main story.

Seeing that he’s called a Battlemage, I expected a lot of teleporting around and spamming people with annoying spells from a distance, but this guy seems more interested in whacking people over the head with his club and sometimes summoning other melee weapons for some variety to the whacking. He appears to be particularly fond of a huge hammer that he apparently tries to make Tarnished pancakes with, fortunately without much luck.

He’s not very fast or difficult to avoid, so overall I’d say he’s definitely one of the easier evergaol bosses I have encountered in the game so far, but considering how extremely annoying some of the others have been, I don’t mind an easy win for once.

If you get too far away from him, he does fire spells as well, but as long as you stay in melee range, he appears happy to stay in melee. Silly him to bring a club to a swordspear fight though. Based on my vast experience doing this one fight this once, I’d say that swordspear beats club one hundred percent of the time. Free statistics too, this video is really starting to come together. Now all we need are some boring details about my character and equipment.

I play as a mostly Dexterity build. My melee weapon is the Guardian’s Swordspear with Keen affinity and Sacred Blade Ash of War. My ranged weapons are Longbow and Shortbow. I was rune level 78 when this video was recorded. I’m not really sure if that is generally considered appropriate, but the difficulty of the game seems reasonable to me. I typically don’t grind levels, but I do very thoroughly explore each area before moving on and then gain whatever Runes that provide. I play entirely solo, so I’m not looking to stay within a certain level range for matchmaking. I don’t want mind-numbing easy-mode, but I’m also not looking for anything too challenging as I get enough of that at work and in life outside of gaming. I play games to have fun and relax, not to be stuck on the same boss for days ;-)
