Elden Ring: Scadutree Avatar (Scadutree Base) Boss Fight (SOTE)

As you probably know, bosses in Elden Ring are divided into three tiers. From lowest to highest: Field Bosses, Greater Enemy Bosses and finally Demigods and Legends.

Scadutree Avatar is in the highest tier, Legendary Bosses, and is found in the Scadutree Base area in the Land of Shadow. It is an optional boss in the sense that it does not need to be defeated in order to progress the main story of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion.

Ah, the Scadutree Base. What an absolutely hideous rotting swamp. Surely nothing could be living here. It’s actually far beneath me, but I’ll just go through it quickly to pick up any abandoned loot and then make my way to the next area.

Or so one might think until the Scadutree Avatar presents itself. And after making its acquaintance, I would say that a hideous rotting swamp is a suitable habitat, as the boss itself looks like a very large and withered flower.

I have no idea what a withered flower would be so angry about. I mean, I was not the one responsible for watering it. Also, it appears to live in a swamp filled with water, so its bad condition is probably more a matter of poor lifestyle choices than a matter of lack of resources. But like everything else in this world, it’s all blamed on me to make me look like the bad guy. I would honestly have expected better from something that used to be a flower.

When first entering the area, it’s actually possible to go around the edge without spawning the boss, so for a while I thought it wasn’t there. There is nothing else there apart from a few withered flowers to pick though, so it’s not really worth the trouble. As soon as I got closer to the middle of the area, the boss appeared and was immediately in a foul mood. On subsequent attempts, when going through the fog gate, the boss would spawn immediately after entering.

At first, I thought that this would just be a slightly beefed up version of the Erdtree Avatars from the base game, but this turned out to be something much more sinister. It has several highly deadly ranged attacks, it moves around very quickly, and it has a large health pool. So another trifecta of annoyances. Except that it has one more thing that is really, really annoying, bumping it up to a quadfecta of annoyances.

The by far most annoying thing with this boss is that when it dies, it will not stay dead. Well, eventually it will, but the first two times I killed it, it would just come back stronger. So I guess that Friedrich Nietzsche’s famous aphorism doesn’t really apply to Scadutree Avatars.

When the boss “dies” the first two times, it will be open to a critical hit. You only have a few seconds to land it and it will move on to the next phase no matter if you manage to or not, but if you do manage to, it will start the next phase with a significant chunk of its health already gone, so it should be a priority in order to make things easier.

The critical hit has to be taken on the boss’ flowerhead, which droops down and is within melee range at that point, so try to position yourself accordingly when its health gets low.

With each temporary death, the boss gains new abilities and becomes a harder fight. I overall found that what worked best was to stay close to its stem and circle around it, trying not to be in front of it. This would limit how much it uses its very deadly long-range attacks, but it did put me at risk of taking damage from some of its short-range area of effects, such as explosions and those thorns it spawns all around it.

I overall found the hardest part of this fight was how long it dragged out. Each individual phase was manageable, but I would usually run out of healing potions by the time I got the boss to phase three, making it very difficult to survive to the end. So, it should be a priority to avoid taking too much damage as you will have to last for a while on this one.

The boss also managed to kill off my usual sidekick Black Knife Tiche, leaving me to fend for myself for the last half of phase three or thereabouts. Based on how many attempts it took me to defeat this boss, I definitely consider it one of the harder ones in Shadow of the Erdtree.

And now for the usual boring details about my character. I play as a mostly Dexterity build. My melee weapons are the Rivers of Blood and the Uchigatana with Keen affinity. I was level 219 and Scadutree Blessing 17 when this video was recorded, which I think is reasonable for this boss. I’m always looking for the sweet spot where it’s not mind-numbing easy mode, but also not so difficult that I will be stuck on the same boss for hours ;-)
