Elden Ring: Divine Beast Dancing Lion (Ancient Ruins of Rauh) Boss Fight (SOTE)

As you probably know, bosses in Elden Ring are divided into three tiers. From lowest to highest: Field Bosses, Greater Enemy Bosses and finally Demigods and Legends.

Divine Beast Dancing Lion is in the lowest tier, Field Bosses, and is found in the Ancient Ruins of Rauh in the Land of Shadow. It is an optional boss in the sense that it is not required to defeat it in order to progress the main story of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion.

I was exploring what appeared to be some old ruins partially overgrown by the jungle, with the intention of studying local flora and fauna, and definitely not because I was looking for loot to “acquire”, when I came across a large temple with what I immediately recognized to be a boss inside. Now, the reluctance of bosses to die and hand over the loot does tend to annoy me, but since I’m a positive person I try to focus on the latter part about them handing over the loot. Or to be more precise, me prying the loot from their dead bodies.

This boss is a bit out of the way, and I had initially missed it, but I came back to ruin its day after cleaning up a certain centipede-scorpion-lady infested church, figuring I might as well get it over with before continuing my mission to put the final boss over the knee.

It is very similar to the first Divine Beast Dancing Lion boss early in the expansion, although it doesn’t seem to spam elemental attacks quite as much. One might think that would make it a lot easier, but on the other hand, it gets help from some Deathblight-spamming basilisks, so one would not be entirely correct.

It did overall feel easier to me, but that may just be because I was higher level and Scadutree Blessing than I was when I faced the first one. Also, this is just a regular field boss, the first one was a Legendary boss, so it would make sense if the first one was harder. The panic-inducing appearance of the basilisks did lead to some headless chicken mode moments that I would rather forget though.

Anyway, this boss is a large lion-like creature that jumps around a lot. It is extremely mobile and will cover long distances quickly. It will use a number of elemental attacks, but also attack in melee. And as mentioned, this variety seems to get help from some Basilisks. I’m not entirely sure if it summons them or if they just sneak up on me, but regardless, they should be disposed of as quickly as possible as they spew poison clouds that stack Deathblight – which is the only status effect I would consider equally annoying to Scarlet Rot.

I summoned help in the form of my usual sidekick Black Knife Tiche for this one. In these encounters with very fast and aggressive bosses – and especially when they get help, so there are multiple enemies – I find that it helps a lot to split the aggro with a helper. And overall, just having someone else to take part of the beating makes it less stressful for me. I do like to spend part of the fight just standing off to the side and sipping some well-deserved Crimson Tears, it just makes it all feel more stylish and it’s definitely not because I would be dying in horrible agonizing pain if I didn’t have assistance.

And now for the usual boring details about my character. I play as a mostly Dexterity build. My melee weapons are the Rivers of Blood and the Uchigatana with Keen affinity. I was level 222 and Scadutree Blessing 18 when this video was recorded, which I think is reasonable for this boss. I’m always looking for the sweet spot where it’s not mind-numbing easy mode, but also not so difficult that I will be stuck on the same boss for hours ;-)
