Elden Ring: Borealis the Freezing Fog (Freezing Lake) Boss Fight

Borealis the Freezing Fog is in the middle tier of bosses in Elden Ring, Greater Enemy Bosses, and is at the Freezing Lake in the North-Eastern part of Mountaintops of the Giants. It is an optional boss in the sense that it does not need to be defeated in order to progress the main story of the game.

As you probably know, bosses in Elden Ring are divided into three tiers. From lowest to highest: Field Bosses, Greater Enemy Bosses and finally Demigods and Legends.

Borealis the Freezing Fog is in the middle tier, Greater Enemy Bosses, and is at the Freezing Lake in the North-Eastern part of Mountaintops of the Giants. It is an optional boss in the sense that it does not need to be defeated in order to progress the main story of the game.

So, I was exploring a lake that was conveniently frozen, making it much easier to run across, when a thick fog suddenly engulfed me. In the real world, I might have found that to be cozy, but in this game, you just know that every unusual thing is a precursor to something horrible.

This time, the “something horrible” is a dragon. Not a regular dragon, but a freezing fog dragon. Well, at least that’s what it calls itself, but I’m not sure if that’s a protected title. Based on my past experiences with dragons, they are not above cheating and stealing, so it would come as no surprise if this particular specimen also dabbles in identity theft to pass the time between harassing innocent wandering Tarnished.

Being in no mood to get stomped on and then turned into a free lunch for any random dragon I come across, I instead took the opportunity to do some testing of my favorite tactical nuke, the Bolt of Gransax, which just happens to do bonus damage to dragons and therefore seemed to be the ideal tool for this particular job.

For some reason, the dragon seemed reluctant to fly around or go into melee, it would mostly just stay in place and breathe its freezing fog at me. Well, two can play at that game, so I would also just mostly stay in place and fire the lightning strike from the Bolt of Gransax right back in its face.

I’ll admit it ended up being a bit cheesy and was definitely not a very difficult fight when done this way, with the hardest part being to not get deep frozen too hard by the dragon’s foul breath, but oh well, not everything has to be difficult and considering the troubles I’ve had with grumpy dragons in the past, I found this a tolerable change of pace.

And now for the usual boring details about my character. I play as a mostly Dexterity build. The weapon I used in this fight is the Bolt of Gransax. My shield is the Great Turtle Shell, which I mostly wear for the stamina recovery. I was level 144 when this video was recorded, which I think is a bit high for this content. I’m always looking for the sweet spot where it’s not mind-numbing easy mode, but also not so difficult that I will be stuck on the same boss for hours ;-)
