Elden Ring: Magma Wyrm (Fort Laiedd) Boss Fight

Magma Wyrm is in the middle tier of bosses in Elden Ring, Greater Enemy Bosses, and is found in the lava lake just outside Fort Laiedd in Mount Gelmir. Like most lesser bosses in the game, this one is optional in the sense that you do not need to defeat it in order to advance the main story.

As you probably know, bosses in Elden Ring are divided into three tiers. From lowest to highest: Field Bosses, Greater Enemy Bosses and finally Demigods and Legends.

Magma Wyrm is in the middle tier, Greater Enemy Bosses, and is found in the lava lake just outside Fort Laiedd in Mount Gelmir. Like most lesser bosses in the game, this one is optional in the sense that you do not need to defeat it in order to advance the main story.

So there I was, just minding my own business and going for a peaceful horseback ride near a lake of volcanic lava, when this huge lizard suddenly charges me and picks a fight. Well, it’s certainly not the first of its kind I have faced, but to shake things up, I decided to fight this one mounted.

The previous ones have all been inside caves where mounts are not available, and I need to practice mounted combat anyway. And since these bosses like to charge around a lot, staying mounted could be helpful.

I’m not sure exactly what happened to it, but at some point during the fight it seemed to get obsessed with running into the wall, so I could just sit there on Torrent and take free swings at it ;-)

After defeating the boss, you may hear someone moaning about being burned by the mountain of fire or something like that. That’s actually Alexander the Warrior Jar, who is trying to temper himself by bathing in the lava. I’m guessing he’ll only be there if you’re doing his questline, but I was, so I was a bit startled to hear a voice coming from the lava. You can talk to him in relative safety by using Torrent to sprint out to the rock next to him and talk to him from there.

And now for the usual boring details about my character. I play as a mostly Dexterity build. My melee weapon is the Guardian’s Swordspear with Keen affinity and Chilling Mist Ash of War. My shield is the Great Turtle Shell, which I mostly wear for the stamina recovery. I was level 113 when this video was recorded. I think that’s too high for this boss, I should probably have taken a different progression route. I’m always looking for the sweet spot where it’s not mind-numbing easy mode, but also not so difficult that I will be stuck on the same boss for hours ;-)
