Elden Ring: Putrid Avatar (Consecrated Snowfield) Boss Fight

Putrid Avatar is in the lowest tier in Elden Ring, Field Bosses, and is found outdoors in the Consecrated Snowfield, near the Minor Erdtree in the Eastern part of the area. Like most lesser bosses in the game, defeating this one is optional in the sense that it is not required in order to progress the main story.

As you probably know, bosses in Elden Ring are divided into three tiers. From lowest to highest: Field Bosses, Greater Enemy Bosses and finally Demigods and Legends.

Putrid Avatar is in the lowest tier, Field Bosses, and is found outdoors in the Consecrated Snowfield, near the Minor Erdtree in the Eastern part of the area. Like most lesser bosses in the game, defeating this one is optional in the sense that it is not required in order to progress the main story.

So, another Minor Erdtree, another Avatar. Except this one is Putrid. And we all know that means Scarlet Rot. Possibly the most annoying status effect in the game. And this one spews out large pools of it whenever it gets a chance. Excellent.

Anyway, it occurred to me that I have actually never beaten the Putrid variety without the help of a summoned spirit, and last time I did kill one with Black Knife Tiche’s help, it ended up being a whole embarrassing thing with me dying just as Tiche killed the boss, so I won even though I lost, and then I had to do the run of shame from the Site of Grace.

Well, I didn’t want to risk that this time, and as I was feeling unusually ready for a challenge, I decided to just go ahead and kill it on my own.

After the encounter with the regular Erdtree Avatar over in Mountaintops of the Giants that duplicated itself so I had to fight two at a time, I fully expected this one to do the same, but fortunately it refrained from doing so. Two bosses spewing Scarlet Rot at me at the same time might have been more than my nerves could handle.

It did take me a couple of attempts to re-learn its attack patterns, but once that is done, the boss is actually not terribly difficult. One annoying thing about this particular fight is that it takes place in a rather narrow area with a lot of rocks, tree stumps and other things that can cramp one’s style when running or rolling, so be careful not to get caught on something just as the boss’s very large hammer-like object is headed for your face.

And now for the usual boring details about my character. I play as a mostly Dexterity build. My melee weapon is the Guardian’s Swordspear with Keen affinity and Thunderbolt Ash of War. My shield is the Great Turtle Shell, which I mostly wear for the stamina recovery. I was level 158 when this video was recorded, which I think is a bit high for this content. I’m always looking for the sweet spot where it’s not mind-numbing easy mode, but also not so difficult that I will be stuck on the same boss for hours ;-)
