Elden Ring: Sir Gideon Ofnir, the All-Knowing (Erdtree Sanctuary) Boss Fight

As you probably know, bosses in Elden Ring are divided into three tiers. From lowest to highest: Field Bosses, Greater Enemy Bosses and finally Demigods and Legends.

Sir Gideon Ofnir is in the middle tier, Greater Enemy Bosses, and is found within the Erdtree Sanctuary building in Leyndell, Ashen Capital. He is a mandatory boss that must be defeated in order to progress the main story of the game.

You may be surprised to find Sir Gideon as an enemy boss at this point since he has served as a non-hostile NPC for most of the game, but as he has also said several times that he himself wishes to become Elden Lord, a confrontation of some sort was to be expected sooner or later. Good thing we all know who the main character of this story is. To paraphrase one of Margit’s sayings, he may as well put those foolish ambitions to rest before I do it for him. But of course, like everything else here, if I want something done right, I have to do it myself.

Anyway, Sir Gideon is a fast and agile caster who outputs extremely high damage across several different spell schools, but he is also very squishy and takes high melee damage. Fighting him feels more like fighting an NPC invader than a typical boss as he is very skilled at dodging ranged attacks and will also back off to drink healing potions when his health gets too low.

My main issue with him was to actually get in melee range and do some damage, as he likes to gain distance and keep nuking when you get close. And hitting him with arrows myself proved very difficult, as he would easily dodge them when he wasn’t casting, so shooting had to be timed well with his casts – and then I would often get hit by the cast as well.

What worked reasonably well was to hide behind one of the large pillars and bait him to come looking for me, at which point I would practice slicing and dicing with my katanas on him. He didn’t seem to appreciate that very much as he would usually spam a lot of spells my way in return.

At one point in the video, I actually almost killed him, but then he gained distance and had a healing potion, so I ended up having more work to do. What a blatant thievery of my moves, running away to chug when things get messy is sort of my signature. Oh well, he had his due punishment and was put to the sword shortly after.

And now for the usual boring details about my character. I play as a mostly Dexterity build. My melee weapons are the Nagakiba with Keen affinity and Thunderbolt Ash of War, and the Uchigatana also with Keen affinity. I only used the Black Bow a little bit in this fight. I was level 172 when this video was recorded, which I think is a bit high for this content, but it was still a reasonably challenging fight, which I’ll admit was also due to me making a lot of mistakes. I’m always looking for the sweet spot where it’s not mind-numbing easy mode, but also not so difficult that I will be stuck on the same boss for hours ;-)
