Bols, Carian Knight is in the lowest tier of bosses in Elden Ring, Field Bosses, and is found in the Cuckoo’s Evergaol in Western Liurnia of the Lakes. Like most lesser bosses in the game, this one is optional in the sense that you do not need to kill it in order to advance the main story.
As you probably know, bosses in Elden Ring are divided into three tiers. From lowest to highest: Field Bosses, Greater Enemy Bosses and finally Demigods and Legends.
Bols, Carian Knight is in the lowest tier, Field Bosses, and is found in the Cuckoo’s Evergaol in Western Liurnia of the Lakes. Like most lesser bosses in the game, this one is optional in the sense that you do not need to kill it in order to advance the main story.
This boss is very similar to the large trolls you have already encountered from early in the game, except that he appears to be undead and is wearing armor. His attack pattern and moveset are very similar to the regular trolls though, but it doesn’t appear to be possible to get him to fall over by repeatedly hitting one of his legs. I guess the ability to stay on one’s feet in pressed situations is what separates bosses from the rest.
As the regular trolls, the main things to watch out for with this guy is his powerful sword attacks that usually either come straight down from above towards your general head area or is swept along the ground. In both cases, there is an area of effect to it, so make sure to stay well clear and then try to take advantage of the few seconds he’s immobile and vulnerable after a big attack to return the painful favor.
Also, if you try to stay close to his legs and lay some pain on there in the hopes of getting him to fall over, he will happily try to stomp on you, usual troll style. When he goes into a stomping frenzy, just move away and he’ll be out of breath after a short while.
In addition to the familiar attacks that he shares with the regular trolls, this boss will also summon some flying magical swords that will try to impale you, so watch out for that and make sure to move away.
Other than that, he’s not much more difficult than the regular trolls, except that he hits harder and has a larger health pool and therefore takes longer to die, but that’s just a pointless delay of your inevitable obtainment of his runes and loot, so don’t worry too much about it ;-)
